Fingersmith analysis: In her first paragraph she has a good understanding of how homosexuality was seen as back in those times, and has already included a few media terms (voiceover, presented, sexuality, audience, two shot). She explains the voiceover and two shot well however a little repetitive when talking about how the audience sympathises for her. She understood the way the music emphasised the atmosphere and characters feelings – “Piano and violin are also used when Maude is lying next to the woman, almost stroking her, to emphasise this romantic and meaningful setting…” . She took notice of even the smallest details such as Maude’s white gloves, saying they represent her purity and innocence. When she mentions Mise en Scene she makes a good point about how the natural setting and sounds convey Maude’s feelings are natural towards the woman. She explains well how the differences are shown between homosexuality and heterosexuality when the man appears. She always notices when the music changes to fit the atmosphere and images on screen to what will happen – “the use of flute becomes louder and high pitched highlights the tension and discomfort Maude is feeling now that she’s exposed herself.” Also “the music then abruptly stops when the male character grabs Maude, emphasising that she is now in danger and gaining sympathy from the audience due to this aggressive male dominance." Her best point she makes that maybe not everyone else would notice was when she explains how her purity and innocence has been taken away after the male character rips off her white glove she’s wearing that symbolises that. Finally she finishes off with describing how the setting and lighting portray her romantic feelings still inside of her, noticing little details such as the candles and low lighting which shows she’s trying to hide her intimate feelings. Overall, this was a well written essay on analysing the extract as she included a lot of terminology throughout, made references back to the question, and mentioned everything from mise en scene, camera shots, editing to sound showing she has a good understanding of it!
